Deciding Between Aftermarket, OEM, and Genuine Auto Parts.

{yorgooads}

OEM, Genuine Auto Parts or Aftermarket

Aftermarket, OEM, or genuine auto parts… you’re confused about what to choose. If that’s you, read the following. Cheaper doesn’t always mean inferior. Such is the case with aftermarket and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) car parts. While they are often up to 70% cheaper than genuine parts, they can be far superior in quality. Like many car owners and car parts buyers out there, I must say that I once thought that the genuine parts sold by my local automotive dealer were better. Well surprisingly, this is far removed from the truth. Do you think that car makers make their own parts? They certainly don’t. They would probably like you to think so but this isn’t the case. OEM parts are made by the same manufacturer as the genuine part you would receive from your local dealer. In other words, it’s really the same part. The only difference is the logo on the box. Here’s what happens. Car makers use outside independent companies to help them design their parts. But after a certain time frame the actual manufacturers of these parts are allowed to sell them to other wholesale distributors for resale. This time they come with the manufacturer’s logo and not that of the car maker. So essentially, the identical part is now referred to as an OEM part. How about aftermarket parts? Are they inferior to genuine parts? … Although aftermarket car parts are not made by the original manufacturer, they perform as well as the original. In many cases, the companies find a way of improving these parts so that the customer gets a part that is of superior quality. There is no need for concern. Aftermarket car parts are produced with the same machinery and materials as OEM and genuine parts. While the parts may have a few minor differences in look and feel, they basically do the same job. The companies who manufacture these aftermarket auto parts are credible. They legitimately buy the rights to manufacture those parts. You can order aftermarket and OEM car parts online today. It’s easy. It’s a great way to save money. Furthermore, you can have peace of mind, knowing that you’re not compromising quality. Gene

Tech Questions from the Readers in the June 2009 Issue - Super Chevy Magazine
All the great tech help from Techin' In with Fletch from the June 2009 issue, with stuff we couldn't put in the magazine!

Thumbs Up

What do you recommend as a rule of thumb for power output and fuel line size needed for supply. Also, single line and return line systems and different carburetors and their specific needs.

Chuck Hoover
Via email

Fletch:Let me start by saying that both of my race cars have #10 line going from the cell to the pump and the pump to the regulator, and #8 from the regulator to the carb. That's what I'd recommend. However, I do know of many guys who have #8 going from the pump to the regulator and #6 feeding the carb, and they seem to be OK. I'm at RWR (my Super Stock engine shop in Phoenix) as I write this, so it was easy to get some further input. A 350-inch Super Stock motor that makes 600 horsepower will run on the dyno with a #6 line, but it won't make it down the race track (#6 is equivalent to 3/8-inch). A Holley carb, due to the bowl size, has more reserve than a Quadrajet, but I don't see how you can hurt yourself by having too much volume or supply. As for the return line, as it's just bleeding off, can probably be good with #6 (I use a #8). I think anything more than 350 HP should be upgraded from 3/8-inch.

1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System - Exhaustive Research

1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System - Exhaustive Research
1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System - Super Chevy Magazine
Our exhaust system on our 1968 Chevrolet Nova has taken a beating due to a broken driveshaft at 5,600 rpm, so we just had to gain the power back with Hooker Headers Competion headers and with a Summit Racing exhaust system.

It's a simple proposition. In the case of an engine, what the induction system sucks in, both air and fuel-wise to make power, it must pump out efficiently to make admirable power. If any exhaust gasses remain in the combustion chamber, then less fresh air and fuel is allowed in to burn. Furthermore, if the engine has to struggle to push the spent fumes through the attending exhaust system, then the powerplant will be robbed of ponies as well simply because the engine can't exhale. Think of it like this. Take a coffee stirrer and try and blow air through it. Then do the same thing with a normal soft drink straw. The soft drink straw is easier to blow through, right? That is what an engine has to deal with when equipped with a restrictive exhaust system, as it has to work harder and expend more effort to push the exhaust fumes through said piping.

1971 Chevy Camaro Rear Suspension - Back To The Street, Part 4 - Tech

After completing the front suspension we felt the need to match the rear suspension of our '71 Chevrolet Camaro with Fat Man Fabrications bolt-in four link kit and 9-inch rearend from Currie Enterprises.

Next, we installed the lower links. This was pretty straight forward as they install using the factory spring buckets. The lower links are non-adjustable and provide you with a geometrical foundation for centering the axles and setting the pinion angle. This also provided you with your side-to-side geometry and saved us countless hours of measuring and fabrication.

1980 Malibu LS Engine And 4L60E Tranny Swap - Light, Swift… And LS Powered?

1980 Malibu LS Engine And 4L60E Tranny Swap - Light, Swift... And LS Powered?
1980 Malibu LS Engine And 4L60E Tranny Swap - Super Chevy Magazine
There is nothing quite like freshening up a 1980 Chevy Malibu with some electronic goods, that includes an LS engine swap and a TCI 4L60E Tranny conversion from TCI Performance Transmissions.

It seems that every time you open an automotive enthusiast magazine, you come across a first-generation Camaro LS-swap. They are everywhere and the fad is growing faster than this recession. And why not? No car of today can match the spine-tingling appeal of a '60s or '70s Bow Tie combined with the technological advances that an LS-motor provides.

Jim Wingo always seems to revive the unsalvageable and the 1969 Chevy Chevelle was no exception as he swapped out the bent chassis with donor car straight frame and other performance parts to bring his Chevelle up to date.

Out back, the 12-bolt rear-end was updated with an Eaton differential and 3.55 gear set. Billet Specialty wheels sit fore and aft with Kelley radial rubber cushioning the front, while Mickey Thompson ET Street radials wrap the rears. Eibach springs lower the Chevelle one inch all around, and adjustable shocks from Competition Engineering assist with the weight transfer and help keep the rear wheels planted to the pavement. The rearend housing is held securely in place by adjustable upper control arms and solid lower control arms from Edelbrock.
